Unique sports auction being held to help raise funds for children's charity PREDA
As part of Galway Community College's 40th anniversary celebration the college is lending their support to the Filipino based children rights charity PREDA. The charity was co-founded by current Rte/Rehab International Person of the Year and recent recipient of the Meteor Humanitarian of the Year award, Fr. Shay Cullen.
PREDA has been strongly supported by the college in recent years and Fr. Shay has been a welcome guest to the college on a number of occasions as have members of the PREDA youth theatre group. The college views its association with PREDA as an intrinsic part of college life as it serves the community on a local, national and global level.
As part of its commitment to raising awareness and much needed funds in helping with PREDA's fight to free children from adult prisons and from lives of sexual servitude, Galway Community College has joined forces with PREDA Galway in organising a sports memorabilia auctions. PREDA is fortunate to have received strong support from well known faces in the sporting world such as Munster, Ireland and Lions player Jerry Flannery, Galway hurling captain Ollie Canning and members of the all-Ireland winning Portumna hurling team, Irish soccer internationals, Shane Long and Kevin Doyle, Padraig Harrington, Niall Quinn and world boxing champion Bernard Dunne.
Photographs of a signed Ireland grand slam winning rugby jersey, a jersey signed by the Portumna all-Ireland winning hurling team, signed Irish soccer jersey, boxing gloves signed by world champion Bernard Dunne, signed Sunderland football, signed golf flag by Padraig Harrington and a few other interesting items will be posted on www.predagalway.org in the coming week.
The auction will be publicised on local radio and all the proceeds will be given directly to Fr. Shay Cullen and his team by a member of staff at Galway Community College who is co-ordinating a team of teachers who are volunteering to work in PREDA this June. The money will be used to help with the construction of a home for girls.
The auction will take place in the Western, the base for PREDA Galway, at 10pm on Friday May 22nd following the presentation of prizes for the collges golf amam held earlier in the day. Members of the public are invited to attend, admission is free and music will be provided by local band and strong supporters of PREDA the "Amazing Apples".
